Effect of sorbed water on the death rate of washed Serratia marcescens.

چکیده
In a previous paper (Monk et al., 1956) on the effect of water on the death rate of Serratia marcescens, a particularly lethal effect was found at a water content of about 50 per cent in the mixture of cells and additives. Since the vapor pressure characteristics of the cells and each of the components was not known in detail it was not possible to determine how much of this water was in the cells and whether the rapid loss of viability was due to a toxic effect of some component. This paper describes an experimental determination of the logarithmic death rates of this organism after rewetting to various water contents following lyophilization of washed cells. It was hoped that measurements of the stability in the absence of salts and other materials ordinarily present or deliberately added would indicate if different degrees of wetting would in itself be toxic to bacteria.

The inhibitory effect of a Lactobacillus acidophilus derived biosurfactant on Serratia marcescens biofilm formation
Objective(s):Serratia marcescens is one of the nosocomial pathogen. The ability to form biofilm is an important feature in the pathogenesis of S. marcescens. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-adhesive properties of a biosurfactant isolated from Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, on S. marcescens strains. Materials and Methods: Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, was selected a...
متن کاملSerratia marcescens B4A Chitinase Product Optimization Using Taguchi Approach
Chitinase production by newly isolated Serratia marcescens B4A was optimized following Taguchi’sarray methods. Twenty-three bacterial isolates were screened from shrimp culture ponds in the South ofIran. A chitinase-producing bacterium was isolated based on it’s ability to utilize chitin as the sole carbonsource. The isolate designated as B4A, was identified as Serratia marces...
متن کاملBiodegradation of malathion by serratia marcescens isolated from Arvandkenar region, Iran
The global use of pesticides has resulted in the contamination of various ecosystems worldwide. The impact of these pesticides can be reduced through bioremediation. The factors that influence the biodegradation rate include the isolation of efficient bacteria for use in remediation and the determination of optimal biodegradation conditions. In this study, malathion degrading bacteria were isol...
متن کاملHandwashing Water Temperature Effects on the Reduction of Resident and Transient (Serratia marcescens) Flora when Using Bland Soap
For many years, sanitarians have specified that hands be washed using warm or hot water to reduce cross-contamination risks, with various authors indicating temperatures between 38C and 48.9C. However, it has been suggested that these temperatures may contribute to skin damage when frequent handwashing is necessitated (in health care and food service). This study evaluates the bacterial reducti...
متن کاملPreservation of Serratia marcescens by high-vacuum lyophilization.
Water-washed Serratia marcescens (ATCC strain 14041) cells were lyophilized in an all-glass system capable of evacuation to pressures of less than 5 x 10(-6) torr. Lyophilization at the lowest pressures resulted in 50 to 65% survival for unstabilized washed organisms compared with 10 to 20% when the cells were lyophilized at pressures of about 2.5 x 10(-2) torr. At the latter pressures, 45 to 6...
